Due to different origins, Fritillaria can be divided into three categories. One species is native to the tropics and can grow for an annual period with no dormancy period. One species is produced in the subtropical zone or in low altitude and high altitude areas, with obvious dormancy. The three types are native to areas where the climate is relatively cold, with long periods of dormancy and falling leaves in winter.

This genus was founded in 1822 by John Lindley, whose Latin name Coelogyne came from two Greek idioms koilos (meaning hollow) and gyne (meaning female), which is probably related to Benjamin. The shape of the stigma is related to the flower. There are approximately 200 species in the genus Pseudomonas. The main divisions are in China and Southeast Asian countries and some islands in the Pacific Ocean. There are about 26 species of Pyrus genus in China, and the main origin is in the southern region.

Species belonging to the genus are mostly large epiphytes, and their flowers are generally brightly colored. The pseudobulbs of the genus Fritillaria are very characteristic. The scorpion tube is oval or conical or columnar, with one or two leaves at the top. This is the most striking feature of this genus. Fritillaria leaves are generally broad, oval and pleated. The texture is generally leathery. The calyx is extracted from the base of the pseudobulb, racemes, and some species have aroma.

In China, Fritillaria is often used as a medicinal material for Dendrobium, and it has been used for nearly a thousand years.
