I remember that in the past when pigs were farmed in rural areas, the weaning time of sows was generally two months. Farmers with good conditions can be weaned early and become 45 days old. Since the introduction of foreign pig breeds and models, the time for weaning has been greatly advanced and the time for breast-feeding has gradually shortened; from a theoretical perspective, 21-day weaning is the best, and one can use as many sows as possible to increase the number of births each year. On weaning days, the recovery of the sow's reproductive system was basically completed, and the conception of abortion was normal. The conception rate was not low.
As mentioned earlier, a pig farm due to excessive breeding, but unfortunately temporarily turned into a 21-day weaning group, but due to adequate preparation, the survival rate of these pigs did not decrease. However, there was also a farm where the boss listened to experts and recommended a mandatory shortening of weaning for 21 days. However, due to poor conditions in the field, the management measures did not keep up, resulting in the onset of piglets after weaning and causing great losses.
How long weaned, I think can be based on two basis, one is the slaughter index, the second is the farm conditions.
If each sow is required to provide more than 25 slaughter pigs each year, early weaning must be considered, provided that the farm's technical management measures and facilities are sufficiently good.
If the slaughter index is to provide 16 pigs per sow per year, if there are 8 pigs per litter, it can produce two litters a year. The lactation period can be extended to 45 days. The empty time is calculated as follows: 365- 2*(114+45)=47 days, which means that there are still 47 days to be allocated with empty time, which is enough. Pig farms with more problems in the nursery phase can fully consider this approach, and the sow’s ability to care for the piglets is much better than that of the breeder.
Therefore, it is recommended that pig farms with poor production levels have no need to force weaning ahead of time. It is the most important for pigs to survive. In particular, pig farms with poor nursery conditions and high nursery mortality rates may consider extending the lactation period and allowing the sows to assist us. We spend the most dangerous stage together.
