Recently, the author visited the countryside to assess the condition of agricultural machinery that had been affected by freezing temperatures. During the visit, it was discovered that many pieces of equipment were in poor shape. Some basic farm sheds were overwhelmed by heavy snowfall, causing the machinery inside to be crushed and deformed. Additionally, certain machines such as trucks, rotary tillers, and cultivators that were left exposed on the ground suffered from severe freezing. Their water tanks were frozen solid, their bodies cracked, and their tubing was both frozen and aged. Mechanical parts also showed signs of rust due to the harsh conditions.
To restore these machines to working condition and ensure they are "strong and sturdy" for the upcoming spring plowing season, the following technical measures have been compiled to help farmers properly repair and maintain their frozen agricultural equipment.
1. Clean the exterior of the machinery. Farmers should thoroughly clean the outer surfaces of their equipment, removing any debris, leftover snow, or moisture. Wipe everything dry with a cloth to keep it clean and prevent further damage from moisture.
2. Clear ventilation holes. Make sure the ventilation holes on the diesel engine’s fuel tank cover are free of snow and rust. Blocked vents can create a vacuum in the fuel tank, which may interfere with fuel flow. Similarly, clear the ventilation holes on the crankcase to prevent oil degradation and potential leaks after use.
3. Clean the fuel system and air filter. Remove any remaining snow from the diesel engine’s fuel supply system and air filter. Replace the paper air filter if it is old or damaged. Also, replace any plastic tubing that has become brittle or aged.
4. Clean the oil pan and replace the engine oil. Inspect the oil pan for dirt and replace the engine oil with one that meets the manufacturer’s specifications.
5. Repair or replace damaged components. Check for any deformed parts, broken triangle belts, or frozen water tanks. Replace them if necessary to ensure proper function.
6. Tighten bolts and nuts. Inspect all fasteners and tighten any that are loose. Remove rust from pivot points and apply grease to ensure smooth operation.
7. Check and replace gear oil. Examine the gear oil in the tractor and rotavator coulter. If it is low or contaminated, add or replace it accordingly.
8. Check the clutch mechanism. Ensure the tractor’s clutch is functioning properly. If it is not operating smoothly, make adjustments as needed.
9. Refill fluids and test the engine. Add the appropriate amounts of fuel, engine oil, and coolant. Start the engine for a trial run and identify and fix any issues that arise.
10. Store machinery properly. Whenever possible, store agricultural implements in dry, well-ventilated sheds. For those kept outdoors, cover them with plastic sheeting to protect against wind and rain, and park them on elevated ground to avoid water accumulation.
By following these steps, farmers can significantly improve the condition of their frozen machinery and prepare it for the next planting season. Taking timely action will not only extend the lifespan of the equipment but also enhance productivity and efficiency during critical farming periods.
