GM food safety concerns lead to convergence with international standards

With China's accession to the WTO, all multinational companies have increased their investment in China, including both opportunities and challenges. Opportunities allow Chinese people to have more direct exposure to international advanced technology and experience and enjoy a better life. The challenge is that some developed countries use their own technological and financial advantages to increase their monopoly power over some domestic industries. The edible oil industry, which is indispensable to the daily lives of ordinary people, is facing such challenges. There are hidden dangers in the safety of genetically modified foods, and some authoritative departments in foreign countries have disclosed them. Some western countries have formulated a series of systems that prohibit the inflow of genetically modified foods and prohibit the consumption of nationals. However, they have resold these genetically modified raw materials and foods to China in large quantities, allowing them to become testers of GM foods. Based on this reason, how can people enjoy more informed rights and eat healthier foods while purchasing quality and healthy cooking oil? Let us all go into genetically modified foods.

GM food safety concerns

In genetically modified foods, consumers consume the most frequently consumed foods. In soybean cultivation, the scale of soybean farm production in the United States, Brazil, and Argentina far exceeds that of China, and the cost of soybean planting is much lower than in China. Compared with the complete planting cost, the soybean planting cost in China is 33% higher than that in the United States. The soybeans grown in the United States are basically genetically modified soybeans. Most of them are exported to China, and are mainly used as soybean salad oil, followed by soybean milk and soybean meal. Soybean blend oil and soybean salad oil currently sold in supermarkets are almost all processed from genetically modified soybeans imported from abroad. As a mainstream oil for blending, more than 90% of its ingredients are made with genetically modified soybean salad oil.

Science shows that the domestic soybean oil export rate of 16-17%, while the export of genetically modified soybean oil is generally 19-22%, a difference of 2-3%. Soybeans have a difference of 1 percentage point in oil output, and the processing of 100,000 tons of soybeans results in a difference of 15 million yuan. This is one of the reasons why foreign edible oil has entered the Chinese market. After GM soybeans were introduced into China, most of them entered edible oil processing companies with foreign investment as the background and processed them into small packaged salad oils. Although this kind of oil has residual gasoline, due to its low price, it can attract the attention of some Chinese consumers.

What is more worthy of alarming is that GM foods have potential safety hazards and some foreign authoritative departments have disclosed them. However, with the invasion of genetically modified soybeans, the safety hazards of these agricultural products have not received sufficient attention in our country, resulting in genetic modification. Soybeans continue to invade China's edible oil market, making Chinese consumers an experimental product of foreign genetically modified soybeans.

Damage to animal organs by genetically modified foods has been confirmed by a secret research report by a well-known British biotechnology company. The following aspects of suspicion exist in the safety of genetically modified foods: 1. Toxins or increased levels of toxins in foods. Some researchers believe that genetically modified foods may increase the content of trace toxins, which can lead to certain genetic diseases. 2, reduced nutrients. The report of the British Ethics and Toxicology Center reported that the beneficial ingredients in GM foods have been reduced by 12% to 14%. 3, cause human allergic reactions, resulting in unpredictable consequences.

Currently, most countries in the world are very wary of genetically modified foods, and even developed the originator of the United States to restrict the sale of genetically modified foods by means of GM labeling system, with its domestic Greenpeace is calling to stop production and sales of genetically modified products. Researchers say the plant, according to Chinese Academy of Sciences, the United States developed with Brazilian beans are some of the amino acid became genetically modified soybeans, after the discovery that some people appeared allergy after eating. For this reason, the U.S. government has not only failed to approve such soybeans as commercial production, but it has not been allowed to be listed at all.

At present, many countries in the world are beginning to oppose genetically modified organisms. Africans would rather starve than eat, and South Korea, Japan and other countries and regions strictly implement the genetically modified identification system. In the European Union in particular, the public has raised doubts about GMOs. It is reported that due to the general opposition of European consumers to genetically modified foods, it is difficult to find GM products in the shops of 30 major retailers in Europe. Many major supermarkets in the United Kingdom prohibit the use of genetically modified organisms as raw materials for food production. More and more people are beginning to refuse to eat genetically modified oils and fats. The International Consumer Association also advocates that food manufacturers avoid the use of genetically modified raw materials and encourage consumers to purchase non-genetically modified oils and fats.

International Oligopoly Makes Ethnic Enterprises Take a Long Way

While more and more people in other countries in the world are beginning to reject GM foods, the GM food market in China has been “singing and singing”. While more and more countries are beginning to impose restrictions on the genetically modified industry, many multinational companies have started to attack the Chinese market.

When the people are hesitant to deal with low-priced genetically modified edible oil, international multinational companies have stepped up their efforts to enter the Chinese market. The most direct example is that many multinational companies accelerated the process of acquiring domestically-funded edible oil companies in 2005. The real intention of such a large-scale acquisition is not to make profits through processing, but to form an oligopoly and ensure the smooth flow of soybean exports to China. In their words: “We need to spend 80% of our investment on destroying our opponents and 20% of our investment on cooperation.” Any unbiased person will notice that domestically owned soybean processing companies have started to become multinational companies one by one. Monopoly of the soybean market in China monopolizes the situation. This situation is very similar to the monopolistic process of the Indian pepper industry. The unthinkable consequence is that once the domestic-funded enterprises in the soybean producing area are destroyed, the industrial chain of domestic soybeans will be torn, and the soybean industry in China will inevitably shrink rapidly due to lack of leading players. The rest will be many helpless farmers. If transnational companies fully control the soybean industry in China, the value of non-genetically modified oil produced in China will not be highlighted, and they will be forced to compete with genetically modified oil at the same level. Under such circumstances, our country will be completely controlled by the situation of people in terms of pricing, processing, and marketing.

Due to misleading oligopolies and public opinion, a large number of genetically modified soybeans have flooded into China, causing the production of oil in our country to be unable to meet the large market demand. The American Soybean Association predicted: "In the next decade, China will need more soybeans and soy products than the United States." This is undoubtedly a wake-up call to us. If we do not increase soybean production significantly in the next few years, we can only continue to rely on imported GM soybeans. If a multinational company forms a monopoly on the import of soybean in China, it will not only destroy China's soybean industry, but will also directly endanger the country's food security. This is by no means alarmist. The results of relevant authoritative departments show that 80% of the right to speak of the soybean market in China is controlled by people. If this situation is not reversed as soon as possible, the consequences will be disastrous.

China is a major producer of oil crops, but at present there is a strange phenomenon. On the one hand, China's farmers produce large quantities of oil crops. On the one hand, China has imported a large amount of genetically modified soybeans and is controlled by others in the soybean market. The influx of a large number of genetically modified soyabeans into our country has great harm to China's agriculture, peasants, national industry, and national food safety, and it should cause serious alarm from our government and people.

According to China's current national conditions, for the safety of edible oil, we have an obligation to publicize the possible safety risks of genetically modified oils, publicize the safety and nutritional value of non-genetically modified oils, and distinguish the essential differences between genetically modified oils and non-genetically modified oils. In China for a long time, public opinion reports on genetically modified products have only focused on the issue of labeling. However, they have not paid more attention to the potential threats to the domestic industry in various fields and the hidden dangers to human survival. .

Let consumers deeply understand the potential threat of genetic modification to people's health, understand the characteristics of the safety, nutrition, and health of non-genetically modified crops, and give consumers a clear and concise consumption environment. Let our people eat healthier and more nutritious.
