The reporter recently learned from Southeast University that the research team of Professor Zhao Yuanjin developed a "heart chip" with micro-physiological visualization function, which is the world's first achievement.

"Organic chip" is the result of clinical trials by constructing micro-organ replacement organisms on a microfluidic chip, which is more economical, faster, and non-invasive. Since the rise of the "organ chip" in 2000, the technology core patent has been controlled by the United States.

"Our 'Heart Chip' uses self-developed living structure color materials, which can be used to visually observe changes in cardiomyocytes compared to the conventional flexible materials used in existing 'organ chips' abroad." Zhao Yuanjin, head of the research group Introduction.

Inspired by the structural color of the chameleon cells, the research team developed a hydrogel elastic film with a micro-groove on the surface, that is, a living structural color material. This jelly-like, multi-colored elastic film contains a series of tiny, hole-like structures inside. When microfluidic technology is used to inject the culture medium containing active cardiomyocytes into the "chip" covering this special film, the elastic gel film is driven to follow the same as the cardiomyocytes stretch and contract. Volume or morphological changes. Due to the crystal arrangement inside the gel, the interference between the reflected light will also change, so the cardiomyocytes can be visually reflected in different colors. When the drug enters the "chip", it causes the cardiomyocytes to "react", and the film changes accordingly, and the color changes to determine the drug's efficacy.

Zhao Yuanjin told reporters that if the "heart chip" can be mass-produced, the cost of a chip is only 200 yuan. Next, the research team will create individual "heart chips" and continue to develop "pulmonary chips" and "kidney chips" to form a complete "human body chip" structure and build a dynamic robot with self-feedback function.
