Eucalyptus Sowing and Seedling Technology

First and foremost, selecting the right location is crucial. A deep sandy loam soil, slightly shaded and protected from strong winds, such as a rice paddy field, makes an ideal nursery. Following the winter plowing, the field should be lightly tilled once, and then thoroughly plowed multiple times before planting in early winter and early spring. It's recommended to apply approximately 1500-2000 kilograms of manure or 25-50 kilograms of cake fertilizer as base fertilizer. Secondly, timing is essential for sowing eucalyptus seeds. The optimal planting window typically falls between the "Rain" and "Convulsion" solar terms. Prior to sowing, seeds must undergo disinfection. They should be soaked in a 2/1000 potassium permanganate solution for two hours to ensure cleanliness. Given that the germination process can take anywhere from 40 to 50 days, and may last up to 60 days with irregular results, pre-soaking the seeds in warm water at 50°C for 3 to 4 cycles can help improve germination rates. In terms of site preparation, shallow trenches should be dug with row spacing of around 20 to 25 centimeters, and each mu (Chinese unit of area) should receive between 10 to 12.5 kilograms of seeds. After sowing, the seeds should be covered with a layer of humus or fine soil about 1.5 centimeters thick, followed by a layer of straw to retain moisture. Once the seedlings emerge, they should be thinned out when they have 3 to 5 true leaves. Approximately 15 to 20 seedlings should be retained per square meter, resulting in about 20,000 to 30,000 seedlings per mu. Banyan tree seedlings often have long taproots and sparse lateral roots, which can negatively impact their transplant survival rate. To encourage lateral root development, when the seedlings reach 3 to 5 true leaves, use a sharp iron spatula to make a 45-degree cut on either side of the seedling at a depth of 5 to 6 centimeters, severing the main root. This practice stimulates lateral root growth. The peak growing season for seedlings occurs from May to June, so applying appropriate fertilizers during this period can significantly boost their growth. Once the seedlings reach a height of 50 to 70 centimeters, they can be transplanted either in the winter or during spring rains. Overall, attention to detail in each stage of cultivation is vital for successful eucalyptus planting, ensuring healthy and robust seedlings for future growth.
