The habits of ducks

Crossbred ducks are the offspring of two distinct duck breeds, typically a Muscovy duck crossed with local varieties. These hybrids are widely used in meat production in China due to their high growth rate and adaptability. While Muscovy ducks thrive in warm, humid southern regions, they are not well-suited for northern climates. Crossbreeding Muscovy ducks with native breeds has led to the development of more resilient and versatile ducks. These crossbred ducks exhibit strong heterosis, meaning they outperform both parent breeds in terms of growth and survival. They can be raised in both wet and dry environments, whether in open fields or confined spaces. Their ability to tolerate cold is significantly better than that of pure Muscovy ducks, allowing them to be raised across a wide geographic range, from north to south. Compared to their parents, these ducks grow faster and have a shorter production cycle. Studies show that crossbred ducks can reach weights of 2250–2500 grams by 8 weeks of age, which is twice as fast as smaller duck breeds. This makes them ideal for commercial meat production, as they can be ready for market within just eight weeks. They have a broad diet and prefer green, juicy feed, making them highly adaptable to various types of roughage, especially when grazing. Even in captivity, their feed conversion rate is superior to that of other duck breeds. By 8 weeks of age, their cumulative feed conversion ratio is typically around 1:2.6 to 2.8, making them efficient and cost-effective to raise.
