China's semiconductor industry: how to string pearls into necklaces

For China's semiconductor industry, 2011 is a year of test, and 2012 is a year of full expectation. The country has successively introduced the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” for strategic emerging industries such as energy conservation and environmental protection, next-generation information technology, new energy, new energy vehicles, and high-end equipment manufacturing, injecting new vitality into the Chinese semiconductor market. The "12th Five-Year Development Plan for the Integrated Circuit Industry" clarifies the development ideas and goals of the integrated circuit industry. The Chinese semiconductor industry will stand at a new historical starting point. At the just-concluded "2012 China Semiconductor Market Annual Meeting" and IC Industry Innovation Conference, experts and business representatives from the conference gave a wonderful view on the development opportunities of China's semiconductor industry and how the chip is linked with the whole machine.

Looking for direction from market changes

How do chip companies understand applications? How to find the whole direction of the chip from the market changes? This is our weakness.

At present, the contradictions and problems that restrict industrial development are still outstanding. Zhou Zixue, chief economist of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, pointed out that China's IC products market share is low, enterprises' continuous innovation ability is not strong, the chip-to-machine linkage mechanism has not yet formed, and the development of professional equipment, instruments and materials lags behind. Not well solved. China's IC industry innovation is still alive, processing technology continues to develop along Moore's Law, the market operation pattern is accelerating, and the challenges brought by the high concentration of capital, technology and talent are very serious.

"Future chip opportunities and challenges coexist." Wei Shaojun, chairman of the IC Design Branch of the China Semiconductor Industry Association, said: "One is that process technology is evolving to a size of 22 nanometers or less and smaller, which will trigger a series of product changes. The application change is the biggest market challenge. How do chip companies understand the application? How can we find the whole direction of the chip from the market changes? In the long run, this is our weakness. Second, integrated circuit integration. Simple calculation to 22 After the nanometer, there are probably more than 600 million transistors on a chip. Such a product is unlikely to be proprietary, and it must have some versatility. Therefore, it is necessary to attach great importance to the development of high-end chips. At present, China is in the micro-processing. The strength of the device and memory is still very weak. How to make achievements on high-end equipment is the key to rapid development."

Li Wei, vice president of CCID Consulting Co., Ltd. also pointed out that in terms of opportunities, Apple recently released the so-called new iPad. From iPhone3, iPhone4, iPhone4S, iPad1, iPad2, now with NewiPad, the speed of product update is getting more and more. Fast, but the extent of the improvement is getting smaller and smaller. This small-step, fast-running innovation is both an opportunity and an adjustment for integrated circuit companies. Can the company's time-to-market and product update speed keep up with the product update speed of the whole machine manufacturer? In terms of challenges, Intel, Samsung, and TSMC's top three manufacturers accounted for 50% of the global IC industry's capital expenditures. The concentration of the entire industry is increasing, and the industry's Matthew effect is prominent. This poses challenges for integrated circuit companies. Very big.

The relevant government departments are also aware of these challenges and are beginning to strengthen their deployment. Ding Wenwu, Director of the Department of Electronic Information of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, mentioned that we support the development of the IC industry through major special projects, integrated circuit equipment and manufacturing processes, and three major technologies for next-generation communications. We hope to launch high-tech integrated circuit development and innovation projects in strategic emerging industries this year. At present, two items have been arranged: the first is platform testing, which allocates 1 billion yuan; the second is cloud computing base. Through these special projects to support the innovation of the IC industry.

Mode positioning is very important

When starting to make a product, it is necessary to consider what the application area of the integrated circuit is and whether the application scale is sufficient.

Nowadays, many fundamental changes have taken place in the industrial environment. Seeking linkage with the whole machine is also the focus of the IC industry.

Mu Wei, vice president of Datang Microelectronics Technology Co., Ltd., mentioned that IC products need to be integrated with the whole machine, which is helping IC products solve positioning problems. From a certain perspective, pattern positioning is very important. When starting a product, consider what the application area of the integrated circuit is and whether the application scale is sufficient. When the product is in the development stage, consider what the next application product market is. Datang Microelectronics' SIM card and ID card have been relatively successful, mainly because it solves the problem of combining with the whole market application. In expanding the social security and financial IC market, we will continue the past ideas and find the development market positioning accurately, which will produce better overall application results.

"Semiconductor manufacturers should integrate with the whole machine factory, and the whole machine factory must of course be integrated with the market. Nowadays, many semiconductor products are not what the semiconductor manufacturers want to do, but what the whole machine manufacturers want to do, such as Apple's products." Yin Gang, director of business expansion in Carl China, mentioned, "This also requires IC design to move toward "system design". It requires not only knowledge of chip design and production, but also how to meet customer needs in system design. To keep up with the pace of application innovation, once the application is slow, the customer may choose to leave, which is critical."

In addition, providing a comprehensive solution is also a key focus for future application market. Deng Maosong, CEO of China Resources Microelectronics Co., Ltd. pointed out that in view of the current development trend of the industry, IC manufacturers are required to provide more comprehensive integration solutions. The most typical example is that when TSMC and Samsung compete in Apple processor orders, TSMC is losing the lack of processor-based IP in the entire solution.
