When Starling is hungry—feed it once in the morning and then leave it without food for three hours—open the cage door, place the cage on the ground, and bring out its favorite food. Let it chase you around. After a short while, hold the food behind the cage and position the cage door to face the bird. Swing the food back and forth to entice it. As soon as the Starling enters the cage, feed it from behind. Gradually, it will learn to go inside on its own. In the future, whenever you take the food out of the cage (with the door open, placed on the ground, and facing the bird), it will immediately jump in.
Older birds are often difficult to train and rarely return after being released. However, with patience and consistent training, it’s entirely possible to get them back. The first step is choosing the right bird. Adult birds have established habits and are hard to tame, so it's best to start with a young, newly fledged bird. The key to training lies in using the bird's natural instinct to seek food. As the saying goes, “Man eats for money,†so the bird must be slightly hungry each time to make it eager for the reward. You should also train the bird to feel comfortable around people. This involves frequent interaction, feeding it by hand, letting it perch on your fingers, and building trust so it knows humans are not a threat.
To prevent the bird from flying away, start by keeping it indoors until it becomes familiar with its surroundings. Then gradually move it outside, allowing it to fly freely but still return to the cage. Attach a thin nylon thread to its leg, starting with a short length and gradually increasing it over time. This helps expand its range while maintaining control. Eventually, the thread can be removed completely. Birds naturally want to escape, but after proper training, they’ll return to their cage willingly. That’s the essence of training.
Additionally, many birds are loyal to their mates. During flight training, it’s common to release only the male while keeping the female in the cage. This encourages the male to return because of his affection for the female, making the training more effective.
