Caterpillar tractors, combine harvesters, straw return machines, and other agricultural equipment can sometimes experience issues when operating in the field. One common problem is that bolts may break off due to high resistance or poor maintenance. Removing a broken bolt can be challenging, but with the right approach, it can be done effectively.
First, clean the area around the broken bolt to make sure there is no dirt or debris obstructing the work. Use a center punch to create a small indentation in the middle of the broken bolt. Then, take a hand drill and start by drilling a 6 to 8 mm hole at the center. Make sure this hole goes straight through the bolt. Once you’ve drilled the initial hole, switch to a larger bit—around 16 mm—and continue drilling until the entire bolt is removed from the hole.
Next, select an electrode with a diameter of 3.2 mm or smaller. Set your welding machine to a medium or low current setting and begin welding from the inside out. Start the weld about halfway up the length of the bolt. Be careful not to let the arc burn too long, as this could damage the surrounding metal. After reaching the top of the broken bolt, continue welding a cylindrical shape with a diameter of 14 to 16 mm and a height of 8 to 10 mm. This will help create a solid base for removal.
Once the welding is complete, use a hammer to tap the top of the welded section. The vibration caused by the tapping, combined with the heat from the welding and subsequent cooling, will help loosen the bolt from its threaded hole. Carefully inspect the area after tapping. If rust begins to fall away, you can then place an M18 nut over the welded part and weld it in place.
After the nut is securely attached, let the piece cool slightly. Then, use a wrench to turn the nut either clockwise or counterclockwise. While turning, gently tap the nut with a small hammer to help break the bond between the bolt and the housing. This should allow the broken bolt to be removed without further damage.
Finally, once the bolt is removed, use a suitable tap to clean the threads inside the hole. This will ensure that any rust or debris is cleared out, making it easier for a new bolt to be inserted properly. By following these steps, you can efficiently remove broken bolts and keep your farming equipment in good working condition.
