The reason that affects the digestion of feed protein

In most conventional feed formulations, the digestibility of protein typically ranges from 75% to 90%. However, it's important to note that a feed cannot be considered high in protein if the protein it contains is not efficiently digested and absorbed by the animal. Several factors can significantly impact the digestibility of feed protein. First, the type of protein plays a crucial role. For example, feather meal has a high protein content—around 86%—but only about 25% of that protein is actually digestible. In contrast, soybean meal, which is commonly used in animal feed, has a much higher digestibility rate of up to 90%. Second, fiber levels in certain feeds, such as hay, corn stalks, and barnyard grass, are often very high. This high fiber content makes it difficult for animals to access and utilize the proteins present in these feeds. Third, the physical processing of feed also affects protein digestibility. If the feed is not properly crushed or processed, the surface area available for digestive enzymes to act on the protein decreases, leading to lower digestibility. Heat treatment during processing can also reduce protein digestibility. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures may denature proteins, making them less accessible to digestive enzymes. Another factor is the presence of protease inhibitors. Raw soybeans, for instance, contain trypsin inhibitors, while potatoes have chymotrypsin inhibitors. These compounds interfere with the action of digestive enzymes, thereby reducing the overall digestibility of the protein. Additionally, non-protein nitrogen (NPN) sources like urea are sometimes added to feed. However, non-ruminant animals, such as pigs or poultry, lack the microbial populations needed to break down and utilize NPN effectively. As a result, these animals cannot benefit from such nitrogen sources in the same way ruminants can. Understanding these factors is essential for formulating effective and nutritionally balanced feed that maximizes protein utilization and supports optimal animal health and performance.
