How to prevent pig constipation

Symptoms: In the early stages of the disease, pigs lose their appetite and often assume a hunched posture. They may frequently attempt to defecate but pass dry, hard fecal balls coated with white mucus. Affected pigs show increased thirst, constantly drinking water and displaying signs of restlessness and abdominal discomfort. As the condition progresses, the pigs become weak, lose interest in food, drink more than usual, and exhibit redness in the conjunctiva, dry mouth, and no significant change in body temperature. Prevention involves providing a balanced diet that includes coarse feed, finely ground feed, and green forage. It is essential to ensure adequate clean water and daily exercise. Avoid feeding weaned pigs only with rice bran. For sick pigs, while administering medication, temporarily remove roughage from the diet and provide plenty of water or juicy green feed. A warm soapy enema can be administered, but it should not be used on pregnant sows to prevent miscarriage. Treatment for pigs weighing around 25 kg includes 9 grams each of hemp seed, glutinous rice, radish seed, yuliangren, and talc, all decocted in water. Alternatively, 30–100 grams of sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate can be dissolved in 600–2000 ml of water and given once. Vegetable oil (100–150 grams) can also be administered orally. Pregnant sows may receive 60–300 ml of liquid paraffin oil. If the pig becomes severely weakened, administer 200–500 ml of 10% glucose solution intravenously or intraperitoneally once daily. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are crucial for recovery.
