The Huawang cabbage variety is a high-quality, heat-resistant type developed by Japan Musashino Co., Ltd. It features a compact growth habit, with a plant height of 20–25 cm and a rosette diameter of approximately 16 cm. The plant has an upright growth pattern, dark green leaves, and long, tender petioles. It contains low levels of cellulose, which contributes to its excellent texture and flavor. The plant shape is aesthetically pleasing, making it highly marketable. Each plant weighs between 100–150 grams, and the variety is known for its strong disease resistance, rapid growth, and high yield—reaching up to 3,000 kg per mu. This makes it ideal for summer cultivation in warm climates.
**II. Cultivation Techniques**
1. **Sowing and Planting**
A new batch of seedlings is sown every 5–6 days starting from April 20th, with sowing continuing until the end of July. The recommended seeding rate is 400 grams per mu. In the greenhouse, the seedbed should be leveled, watered from below, and then sown. After sowing, the soil is lightly watered, and then covered with a shade net or straw mulch. A plastic film combined with a shade net is also used to maintain moisture. Watering should be done every 3–4 days, keeping the soil slightly moist. Micro-sprinkler irrigation is recommended for better results. Once the seedlings have developed 2–3 true leaves, weak or stunted plants are removed. Before transplanting, 600 kg of organic compound fertilizer is applied per mu. Furrows are made, and the soil is deeply tilled. When the seedlings have 4 leaves and 1 heart (around 25 days old), they are transplanted at a spacing of 10–12 cm square. After planting, shade nets are placed over the beds to protect the young plants.
2. **Field Management**
After transplanting, timely watering is essential to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot weather. Regular monitoring of the seedlings is important. If the plants appear weak or underdeveloped, a top dressing of 15 kg of urea per mu can be applied once or twice to boost growth.
3. **Pest and Disease Control**
Common diseases include viral infections, so strict control of aphids is necessary. Insect pests such as Plutella xylostella (diamondback moth) and Pieris rapae (cabbage white butterfly) are managed using Ruijinte 5% colloidal suspension diluted at 2000 times. Apply 40 ml per 100 m², or about 30–40 ml per mu, for effective control.
4. **Harvesting**
The plants are harvested when they are slightly crowded, and the weight exceeds 100 grams. The harvest period typically occurs around 25 days after planting. Timely harvesting ensures optimal quality and marketability.
