Problems and Countermeasures in Swine Swine

Keeping pigs warm in plastic greenhouses can be a challenge due to the poor insulation of the plastic film. During winter, low temperatures, limited sunlight, and large temperature differences between the inside and outside of the shed often lead to condensation on the plastic cover, reducing its insulating effect. To improve warmth retention, several measures can be taken. First, covering the roof with a layer of straw or hay at night can significantly enhance insulation. Second, using double layers of plastic film can further improve thermal efficiency. Third, managing the pigs' habits by encouraging them to defecate and urinate in specific areas helps maintain cleanliness and reduces moisture buildup. Fourth, raising pigs in high-density groups within each pen allows their body heat to naturally warm the environment. Fifth, laying dry grass on the floor of the pig house provides additional insulation. Lastly, regularly checking the plastic film for holes and repairing them promptly ensures that the structure remains effective and well-maintained. In enclosed greenhouses, humidity can become a serious issue as it is difficult to evaporate. High humidity levels can make the environment feel colder, especially when it's chilly outside. To manage this, daily ventilation is essential. Open the sunroof and vents between 10 am and 2 pm when temperatures are higher, and ventilate for 30 to 60 minutes each time. On sunny days, extend the ventilation period slightly, while on cloudy days, it can be shorter. If possible, install air conditioning or fans to help regulate humidity. Regularly changing the bedding materials also helps absorb excess moisture. Ash and dry soil can be used to soak up dampness in the piggery. Additionally, wiping condensation off the plastic film with an absorbent cloth reduces indoor humidity. The concrete floor should have a slight slope to allow waste to flow into the urine pit and be removed promptly. Harmful gases such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide can accumulate in the greenhouse due to pig respiration, excretion, and the fermentation of feed and bedding materials. These gases can cause health issues in pigs if not properly managed. To reduce gas buildup, ensure regular ventilation by opening the sunroof and vents daily. Pig manure and urine are the main sources of these harmful gases, so they must be cleaned at least three times a day—morning, noon, and evening. Keeping the floor clean and dry is crucial. Additionally, regularly cleaning feeding equipment, such as troughs and sinks, with hot water prevents leftover food from rotting and producing bad odors. All tools and utensils should be kept separate and disinfected regularly to eliminate bacteria and maintain a fresh, healthy environment. Proper ventilation and hygiene practices not only improve air quality but also boost the pigs’ immunity and overall productivity.
