There are taboos around orchards

In the process of managing orchards, it's common to plant trees around the garden or mix different varieties in order to enhance aesthetics, improve the environment, and diversify the fruit types. However, improper planting can negatively impact the growth and development of fruit trees, leading to significant losses in production. Below are several tree species that should be avoided when planning an orchard. 1. **Eucalyptus** – It is not advisable to plant eucalyptus near citrus groves or vineyards. Eucalyptus is a favorite host for pests like the citrus red mite and brown scale, which can lead to severe infestations. Additionally, the root secretions of eucalyptus contain organic compounds that inhibit the growth of nearby plants, such as grapes. If eucalyptus roots reach grapevine areas, they can cause reduced yields or even plant death. 2. **Hedgehog (Robinia pseudoacacia)** – This tree should not be planted near citrus, vineyards, apple orchards, or other fruit-bearing areas. It attracts pests like aphids, which feed on leaves and young shoots, causing leaf deformation and fruit damage. Moreover, Robinia pseudoacacia secretes tannic acid, which has a strong inhibitory effect on many fruit trees, potentially leading to long-term failure of the orchard. 3. **Paulownia (including Tung)** – Paulownia is a primary host for root rot disease in fruit trees. Infected trees show poor growth, yellowing and premature leaf drop, and eventually die from branch drying. This disease poses a serious threat to orchard health and productivity. 4. **Pine Trees** – Pine pollen can harm various fruit trees, especially pears. Pollen from pine trees can travel up to 200–300 meters and cause yellow spots on pear leaves, leading to abnormal growth, reduced fruit set, and deformed fruits. To prevent this, pear orchards should be located at least 500 meters away from pine forests. 5. **Cypress** – Cypress trees act as intermediate hosts for apple and pear rust fungi. The disease spreads between fruit trees and cypress, surviving through winter and re-infecting fruit trees the following season. Planting cypress near orchards increases the risk of rust outbreaks, affecting both yield and fruit quality. 6. **Mulberry Trees** – Mulberry trees can spread pests like the mulberry whitefly to nearby stone fruit trees such as peaches, plums, and cherries. These pests damage young shoots, stunt growth, and may even kill entire trees. In summary, when planning mixed planting or selecting locations for orchards, it's crucial to carefully choose compatible tree species. Avoid planting trees that could harm fruit trees or attract pests. Thoughtful selection and proper spacing are essential for maintaining a healthy and productive orchard.
