Hualu Loofah is a newly developed hybrid variety bred by the Seed and Seedling Center of South China Agricultural University. This variety is known for its early maturity, with spring planting leading to harvest within approximately 50 days and autumn planting yielding results in around 40 days. The main vine is capable of continuous fruiting and has strong productivity. The fruits are typically 60–65 cm long, with uniform shape, dark green skin, shallow furrows, and excellent commercial value. Each melon weighs about 400 grams, with tender and sweet flesh. It exhibits good heat tolerance, strong disease resistance, and high yield, reaching 3,000 to 5,000 kg per mu.
The cultivation process includes several key steps:
1. **Planting Season**: For spring planting, it's best to sow between late February and mid-April. Autumn planting should be done between July and August. Summer sowing in May and June may lead to higher temperatures and longer sunlight, resulting in more female flowers but lower yields.
2. **Seedling Preparation**: In spring, seedlings can either be transplanted or directly sown. Early spring planting requires covering with plastic film to protect against cold. For summer and autumn, direct broadcasting is recommended.
3. **Field Selection and Planting**: Choose fields that have not been used for melon crops in the past three years, such as rice paddies or open fields. The soil should be loose, fertile, and well-drained. Before planting, prepare the soil thoroughly and apply 1,000–1,500 kg of manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer as base fertilizer. Plant in ridges with a width of 1–8 meters, two rows per ridge, spaced 40 cm apart, totaling about 1,800 plants per mu.
4. **Field Management**:
- **Fertilization**: Apply top dressing when female flowers appear. After fruiting, use nitrogen and potassium fertilizers, applying one round of fertilizer after 1–2 harvests. In the later stages, focus on nitrogen with some potassium added.
- **Training and Pruning**: Once vines start growing, support them using a "person" frame or "zigzag" trellis. Remove lateral vines shorter than 1 meter, while allowing longer ones to grow on the trellis or be topped.
- **Pest Control**: Common diseases include downy mildew and powdery mildew. Major pests are *Liriomyza sativae* and *Huangshougua*, which can be managed with standard chemical treatments.
This variety is ideal for both small-scale and commercial farmers due to its ease of cultivation, high yield, and superior quality. With proper care, Hualu Loofah can provide a profitable and sustainable crop option.
