In spring and summer, plenty of rain to prevent vegetable diseases in open field

Summer is a high-risk season for various open-field plant diseases, and the frequency and intensity of rainfall are closely linked to disease outbreaks. The more rain there is, the more severe the diseases tend to become. Over the past ten years, since the late 1990s, in the Beijing area, vegetable diseases during the summer have been relatively mild, which aligns with the favorable climate characterized by less precipitation and more sunlight compared to previous decades. However, climate change is unpredictable and has quasi-periodic characteristics, making accurate forecasting challenging. Historically, it has been rare for there to be almost a decade without any significant disease outbreaks since the founding of the People's Republic of China. In recent springs, there was an unusually high amount of rainfall—72.9 mm more than the average for the same period—and early summer also saw increased rainfall, with 64.5 mm more than the usual level in June. Given these conditions, we urge all relevant departments and vegetable farmers to remain vigilant about the potential for serious disease outbreaks. It is essential to take preventive measures early, stock up on necessary pesticides, and be prepared to respond quickly. Once adverse weather conditions arise, effective prevention and control strategies must be implemented to ensure the stability of off-season vegetable supplies, especially for the capital market in August. 1. Focus on key diseases such as Tomato Late Blight, Eggplant Blight, Sweet (Spice) Pepper Disease, Cucumber Diseases, Eggplant Brown Vein, Rack Bean Disease, Cucumber Anthracnose, Cucumber Bacterial Leaf Spot, and Cucumber Leaf Burn. Strengthen field inspections, monitor disease trends closely, and stay updated with weather forecasts. Be proactive in identifying potential threats and act accordingly. 2. Implement proper field management practices to prevent and control diseases. Water according to weather conditions, soil moisture, and crop growth stages, preferably in the morning or evening to avoid overwatering and waterlogging. Ensure good drainage in the fields. Perform timely cultivation, top-dressing, and weeding to promote root development, prevent premature aging, and enhance plant resistance. Adjust fertilizer application to include more organic manure, and pay attention to phosphorus and potassium usage. Remove diseased leaves and fruits promptly, and bury them deeply. Avoid smoking while working in the fields, and when pruning, use healthy strains. Wash hands thoroughly with soapy water after handling virus-infected materials. 3. Based on field investigations, choose appropriate control agents in a timely manner. For Tomato Late Blight, Eggplant Blight, Sweet (Spice) Pepper Blight, and Cucumber Epidemic: Use 72% Mancozeb Manganese Zinc WP at 600 times dilution, or 69% Azoxystrobin Manganese Zinc (AZM) water-dispersible granules at 600 times, or 72.2% Fexofenadine (Feross) 600 times, or 68% Jinlei (Fine Arsenic Manganese Zinc) water-dispersible granules at 600–800 times. When applying to Sweet (Spice) Pepper Blight, be sure to spray not only the upper parts but also the base of the stems and surrounding areas. For Eggplant Brown Spot, Sweet (Hot) Pepper, Rack Bean, and Cucumber Anthracnose: Apply 70% Mancozeb WP at 400–500 times dilution at the onset of the disease, or 80% Mancozeb WP at 600 times, or 50% Benomyl (Bacteroides spp.) WP at 800–1000 times. For Cucumber Bacterial Angular Spot and Rack Bean Leaf Burn: Use Neomycin powder at 4000–5000 times dilution, or 47% Garrinong (Spring King Copper) WP at 800 times. In addition, under conditions of high humidity, heat, and heavy rain, tea pests that affect many vegetables can rapidly multiply and spread. Increase monitoring efforts, and if infestations are detected, apply 1.8% Abamectin EC at 4000–4500 times, or 5% Flubendiamide (Stuck Grams) EC at 1500–2000 times, or 2.5% Kung Fu EC at 2000 times, or 20% Chloramphenicol at 2000 times. Focus spraying on young plants to protect them effectively.
