Chinese cabbage ditch method

The trench method involves digging storage trenches on open, flat, and dry ground. Cabbage is placed inside these trenches for preservation. The success of this method relies on several key factors: the depth of the trench, the timing of excavation, the thickness of the covering soil, and the way the cabbage is arranged. The depth of the trench depends on the local permafrost layer and whether it's meant for winter storage. Ideally, the trench should be dug when the plant has 2 to 3 leaves that are slightly frosted—usually just before or after a light snowfall. The covering soil should be about 0.5 meters thick, providing enough insulation to protect the cabbage from extreme cold. When selecting a site, choose an area with well-drained, clay-like soil, low groundwater levels, and easy access for transportation. Trenches should be dug in a north-south direction, approximately 1.5 meters wide and 0.25 meters deep. Their length can vary depending on the terrain and the amount of cabbage to be stored. The excavated soil is then used to build a raised mound around the trench, about 0.7 meters high. This height should match the height of the cabbage plants to ensure proper coverage. Before placing the cabbage in the trench, a layer of straw or dried leaves is laid at the bottom. The cabbage is then carefully placed into the trench, packed tightly to minimize air pockets. Another layer of straw or leaves is added on top, followed by a final layer of soil, 0.5 to 0.7 meters thick, to fully cover the crop. This method helps maintain stable temperatures and protects the cabbage from freezing during the colder months.
