Winter potato potato mixed storage

In winter, many farmers tend to store sweet potatoes and regular potatoes together. However, this practice is not scientifically sound and can lead to spoilage or reduced quality of both crops. Sweet potatoes thrive in a temperature range of 12°C to 15°C, where they can be stored for a long time without issues. If the temperature drops below 9°C, they risk frost damage, which may cause them to rot or become hard. On the other hand, regular potatoes require cooler storage conditions—ideally between 1°C and 5°C. If kept above 7°C, they spoil more quickly. At temperatures below 0°C, they are prone to freezing and rotting. When stored above 5°C, potatoes may develop skin shrinkage, especially once the buds on their eyes start sprouting. Once sprouting begins, the potatoes produce a toxic compound called solanine near the sprouts, which can be harmful to humans and animals. Therefore, it's important to remove the flesh around the sprouts before eating. If the sprouts turn dark and grow significantly, the potato should be discarded. When storing regular potatoes, keeping them between 10°C and 15°C helps maintain stable starch levels, but they shouldn’t be stored for too long—ideally no more than two months. To ensure the best quality and safety, sweet potatoes and regular potatoes should always be stored separately, as their ideal storage conditions differ significantly. This careful approach not only preserves the nutritional value of the tubers but also prevents potential health risks.
