Garden Greening
A flat courtyard: Start by loosening the soil in the courtyard using gravel. This helps improve drainage and prepares the ground for planting.
B. Planting: Choose small trees such as grapes, jujube, pear, citrus, osmanthus, camellia, and mulberry. The planting order is as follows: first a row of grapes, then a row of jujube trees, followed by citrus, and finally camellia and sweet-scented osmanthus. In the front yard, plant two Dou Ying or Shannon landscape trees along with some pods or figs to add visual interest.
3. Shading and arranging flower beds: Use wire and bamboo to create trellises for the grapes, extending up to the first 2 meters. After that, build scaffolds around 1.8 meters high, shaping them in a slanted manner. Flower beds are constructed using cement, sand, and decorative bricks, making them geometrically shaped. Don’t forget to install bottom drain holes to prevent waterlogging.
IV. Horticultural Engineering: The ground floor often has a layer of cement slab. This needs to be broken using a shovel or hit with a hammer. Some areas may require an electric drill to break through. Once the cement layer is removed, proceed with planting. Apply fertilizer before planting and water the plants thoroughly after planting.
5. Fertilization: Add well-decomposed humus soil into the flower beds, then mix in farmyard manure compost, phosphate fertilizer, distiller's grains, and ash from husks to enrich the soil and promote healthy growth.
6. Interplanting: At the base of fruit and ornamental trees, interplant vegetables like Shanghai cabbage, snow pea shoots, garlic, onions, and more to maximize space and yield.
7. Pruning and Pest Control: For jujube trees, prune away cross branches, weak branches, and leggy growth. Citrus trees should be pruned to form a main branch and secondary branch structure, creating a well-shaped hollow tree. Grapes need pruning on the trellis and mid-branch trimming to encourage early fruiting. Common pests include cabbage caterpillars, leaf miners, and pear rust. Spray appropriate insecticides, and for butterflies, use phosphorus-based pesticides.
8. Garden Beautification with Flowers: Popular choices include Aloe Vera, Carnation, Chrysanthemum, Blue Daisy, Geranium, Red Hibiscus, Blue Orchid, South Tianzhu, Iron Tree, and Iris. These flowers add color and beauty to the garden throughout the seasons.
