In a groundbreaking development, French researchers have discovered a novel approach to treating prostate cancer by repurposing existing medications originally designed for diabetes and epilepsy. Through experiments on mice, the team found that combining these two drugs can significantly slow tumor growth and prevent the spread of cancer cells, offering hope for a new treatment strategy.
The study, conducted by scientists at France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research, was published in the October issue of the Journal of Biomolecules and Cells. The research focused on a protein called PPARgamma, which plays a key role in regulating gene expression in response to external signals. When activated by a specific ligand, this protein can suppress the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells.
In addition to the ligand, the researchers also examined the effects of histone deacetylase inhibitors—molecules known to influence gene activity. They found that when used together, these compounds enhance the anti-cancer properties of PPARgamma, effectively limiting the spread of cancerous cells.
Building on these findings, the team tested a combination of a drug that mimics the ligand and a histone deacetylase inhibitor in mice. The results were promising: the treatment not only reduced tumor growth but also prevented metastasis. This dual therapy is particularly exciting because both drugs are already approved for other conditions, potentially speeding up their transition to clinical use.
Researchers believe that this treatment could be especially beneficial for patients who have undergone chemotherapy or radiation and later experience a rise in prostate-specific antigen levels. Clinical trials are now being considered as the next step to validate the findings in human patients.
According to data from the French Urological Association, approximately 50,000 men in France are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually, and around 10,000 die from the disease each year. With this innovative approach, there is growing optimism that more effective and accessible treatments may soon become available.
