A groundbreaking approach to treating prostate cancer has been discovered by French researchers, who found that combining two existing drugs—used for diabetes and epilepsy—can effectively slow tumor growth and prevent the spread of cancer cells. This innovative therapy offers a promising new path in the fight against prostate cancer.
The research, conducted by scientists at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) in France, was published in the October issue of the *Journal of Biomolecules and Cells*. The study focused on a protein called PPARgamma, which plays a key role in regulating gene expression and cellular function. When activated by specific molecules, this protein can suppress the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells.
In addition to PPARgamma activation, the researchers also explored the use of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, which can enhance the anti-cancer effects of PPARgamma. By combining a drug that mimics the action of PPARgamma ligands with an HDAC inhibitor, the team observed significant results in mouse models. The treatment not only reduced tumor size but also prevented the metastasis of cancer cells to other parts of the body.
What makes this discovery particularly exciting is that both drugs have already been approved for use in humans for other conditions. This means that the transition from laboratory research to clinical application could be much faster than with entirely new medications. The researchers suggest that this combination therapy should be tested first in patients who have undergone chemotherapy or radiation and are showing signs of rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, as these individuals may benefit most from the treatment.
Prostate cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among men in France. According to data from the French Urological Association, approximately 50,000 men are diagnosed each year, and around 10,000 die from the disease. With this new treatment option, there's hope for improved outcomes and better quality of life for many patients in the future.
