Under normal conditions, cycads typically grow as single-trunk plants. However, with the right techniques, it's possible to cultivate long, multi-headed cycads. Here are three effective methods to achieve this.
The first method involves preparing a mature cycad before spring sprouting. Select a sago palm with a stem diameter of 8 to 10 centimeters and remove all the leaves. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut open the eccentric part of the stem without damaging the central pith. Place the plant in a shallow container, reduce watering for 4 to 5 days, and gently loosen the soil around the roots. Carefully separate the roots from the two sepals, and trim any weak root hairs. Position the plant flat on top of the soil, and in late spring, new pups will begin to grow at the top. Over time, these pups will develop into full leaves. By the third year, each pup will grow into a small trunk, forming the base of a long cycad. Cycads are naturally upright, so even if the pups grow from the sides, they will eventually grow straight up toward the light.
The second method focuses on cutting the top of the pith. Before spring sprouting, remove all the leaves and make a shallow cut (about one-third deep) at the top of the pith using a sharp knife. Remove the growth point of the top leaf. After that, manage the plant normally, keeping it dry and avoiding overwatering. In the second year, although no new leaves appear, the old stem will gradually swell and form a ball-like structure. By the third year, a cluster of new leaves will emerge from the top, with each group producing a "cub shell" that extends outward. Eventually, the cub shells will fall off, and the plant will develop multiple heads.
The third and simplest method involves selecting a cycad with 3 to 4 existing pups, regardless of their size. Cut off all the leaves and plant the pups vertically or horizontally in a shallow container or directly in the ground, ensuring the base faces the sun. By the following spring, the top will produce 4 to 6 new leaves, while the pups will also grow additional leaflets, increasing in length and height. This process leads to the formation of a multi-headed cycad that can grow both upward and outward. This method is ideal for beginners, as it only requires a cycad with 3 to 4 pups and minimal care.
