Recently, the Heshui County Environmental Protection Bureau and the Forestry Bureau of Gansu Province made a remarkable discovery in the Ziwuling forest area — a wild population of purple peony (Paeonia suffruticosa var. rubra). The estimated area covered by these plants is around 500 mu, making it one of the most significant finds of this rare species in recent years. The purple peony is a nationally protected plant, known for its unique beauty and ecological importance. Native to China, it is considered a rare and endemic species, with limited natural distribution. This particular variety of peony stands out due to its distinct features. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 180 cm tall. One of its most notable characteristics is the dark purple or purplish spots at the base of each petal, which add to its visual appeal. The petals are thicker, the fragrance more intense, and the overall plant is more robust compared to other peony varieties. Additionally, it exhibits stronger cold resistance and better resilience against pests and diseases. In response to this important discovery, Heshui County is actively working on establishing an original conservation area specifically for the wild purple spotted peony in the Ziwuling region. This initiative aims to ensure the long-term survival of this endangered species and promote further research and protection efforts. The local authorities are also planning educational programs to raise public awareness about the significance of preserving such unique flora. This effort not only benefits the peony itself but also contributes to the broader goal of biodiversity conservation in the region.
