In a recent discovery, the Heshui County Environmental Protection Bureau and the Forestry Bureau of Gansu Province have identified a wild peony tree in the Ziwuling forest area. This rare and unique species, known as the purple peony (Paeonia suffruticosa), is native to China and classified as a nationally protected rare plant. The estimated area where this species is distributed covers approximately 500 mu (about 33 hectares).
The purple peony is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 180 cm tall. One distinguishing feature of all its varieties is the presence of dark purple or purple spots at the base of the petals. Compared to other peonies, it has thicker petals, a stronger fragrance, and is generally taller and more resilient. It also exhibits better cold resistance, stronger growth, and fewer pest and disease problems.
This discovery has sparked significant interest among botanists and conservationists. To ensure the survival of this endangered species, Heshui County is currently working on establishing an original conservation area specifically for the wild purple spotted peony in the Ziwuling region. This initiative aims to protect the species from external threats and support its natural regeneration.
