Despite its small size, it poses a significant threat to stored food products and agricultural goods.
(1) **Hazard Characteristics**
These mites are attracted to sweet and moist environments, often thriving in both animal and plant-based storage areas. They have been frequently found in containers of Flammulina velutipes (a type of edible mushroom), and they can also feed on mold growths. Their adaptability allows them to survive in a variety of conditions, making them a persistent problem in storage facilities.
(2) **Occurrence Patterns**
Domestic sweet mites tend to gather in large numbers in hay, animal waste, and organic debris found in homes and livestock barns. They are also commonly found in garbage and waste materials in warehouses. These pests feed on a wide range of plant-based products such as rice, wheat, flour, bran, peanuts, sesame seeds, red dates, flaxseed, beet seeds, and even tobacco. They can also consume animal by-products like dried tripe, ham, and dried squid. Additionally, they are capable of feeding on molds that grow on fibers and haystacks. With so many food sources available, their survival rate is high. At a temperature of 23–25°C and relative humidity between 80% and 90%, the life cycle of the sweet mite can be completed in about 22 days. Their dormant stage is highly resistant to drying, allowing them to remain viable inside husks for up to six months or even several years.
(3) **Prevention and Control Measures**
Maintaining cleanliness in storage areas is crucial in preventing infestations. Avoid throwing dirt or mushroom waste around the home, and keep mushrooms away from livestock areas and grain storage facilities. Regular disinfection of mushroom houses is essential. It's also important to restrict access to these areas by workers to prevent accidental introduction of mites into the environment. By implementing strict hygiene practices and monitoring storage conditions, infestations can be effectively controlled.
