After grapes become available in late autumn, they are directly planted in Daejeon without undergoing a wintering period. This method allows the roots to establish quickly once the buds start growing in the following spring. The close contact between the root system and the soil makes it easier for the plants to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in early root development and vigorous sprouting. As a result, the survival rate of the seedlings typically reaches around 98%.
Autumn planting is best done two weeks after the leaves have naturally fallen. In regions such as northern Jiangsu, Anhui, and southern Shandong, the ideal planting window is generally from November 10th to December 15th. However, in colder areas like north of Beijing and the northeastern part of China, autumn planting is not recommended due to the risk of freezing soil before the plants can take hold.
Before planting, the selected site should be prepared by digging and setting up a double-row fence. The spacing should be 2 meters between rows and 1 meter between plants, which equates to approximately 333 plants per acre. Each row should not exceed 70 meters in length. A trench is dug 50 cm deep, with the topsoil and subsoil separated. A mixture of organic fertilizer (5,000 kg per acre), superphosphate (200 kg), and cooked soybean cake (150 kg) is prepared. The mature soil is first placed back into the trench, followed by half of the fertilizer. Then, 25 cm of mature soil is added on top, and the remaining fertilizer is mixed into the upper layer. The soil should be raised 10 cm above ground level, followed by thorough watering. It's important that only mature soil is used in the trench—never raw soil. The trench should be filled and leveled at least one week before planting.
When planting, the seedlings are placed in the center of the trench, and planting holes are dug according to the desired spacing. The seedlings are soaked in water for three hours before being trimmed, with damaged roots and fine roots removed. They are then dipped in a solution containing calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers. After that, they are placed into the holes, covered immediately with soil, and watered to ensure the roots are well-anchored. Planting should be done carefully, ensuring the roots are fully covered and not left hanging. After planting, the ridges should be loosened, and a flood irrigation is applied. If the weather is dry, watering once a week is recommended, allowing the water to seep in slightly before tilling and covering the soil with mulch. The surface is then lightly compacted with a shovel, and the soil mounds should be 15–20 cm high.
In the second year, from March 15th to 25th, the soil should be loosened and watered again. After the soil dries slightly, it is leveled and compacted. Herbicides such as acetochlor are sprayed to control weeds. Immediately after, a 80–100 cm wide plastic film is laid over the area. Small holes are made in the film to allow the upper branches of the grapevines to emerge. A small amount of fine soil is placed around the base of the film to seal it tightly. Once the film is in place, any excess plastic is removed.
