British researchers have discovered a potential link between the pH level of brain fluids and IQ. According to their findings, within the normal range of body fluid acidity, lower IQ scores are associated with more acidic conditions, while higher IQ levels are linked to a more alkaline environment. This discovery suggests that the balance of acidity and alkalinity in the brain may play a role in cognitive function.
This theory aligns with the well-known fact that when the body is fatigued, substances like lactic acid and urea accumulate, increasing the acidity of body fluids. In a study involving 42 boys aged 6 to 13, scientists found that those with a pH above 7 showed significantly higher IQ scores compared to those with a pH below 7. This marks the first time that researchers have directly connected human intelligence to the pH level of brain fluids. They refer to this as the "chemical marker" of intelligence.
Since the pH of body fluids can be influenced by diet, scientists propose that adjusting eating habits—such as consuming more alkaline foods—could help enhance cognitive abilities. Based on their mineral content, foods are categorized into three groups: alkaline, neutral, and acidic. Alkaline foods include fruits, vegetables, soy products, seaweed, and certain beverages rich in potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium. On the other hand, acidic foods such as meat, grains, oils, and alcohol contain higher amounts of phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur, and iodine. However, it's important to note that sour-tasting foods aren't always acidic. For example, oranges are considered alkaline because they are high in potassium, despite their tart flavor.
To support healthy brain development, scientists recommend that children reduce their intake of meat, fish, and oily foods, while increasing consumption of soy products, dairy, fruits, and vegetables.
